Nerses Pogosyan stops his hunger strike

Nerses Pogosyan, a figurant in the case of Zhirair Sefilyan, the leader of the oppositional movement "100 Years without Regime", has stopped his protest hunger strike on the 24th day thereof, in the evening on October 22, his advocate Araik Papikyan told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Nerses Pogosyan was arrested on May 31, 2016. He is accused of illegal possession of weapons and ammunition. According to prosecution, Nerses Pogosyan cooperated with Zhirair Sefilyan, one of the leaders of the movement "100th Anniversary without Regime". The defendant pleads not guilty.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Nerses Pogosyan went on a hunger strike on September 29 in protest against the refusal to release him from custody.

According to his advocate, Pogosyan complained about pains in his heart, kidneys and liver, as well as about constant dizziness. After his hunger strike, he is very exhausted; and his eyes ache because of vision problems, Mr Papikyan said.

"However, he still rejects medical examination; and we hope that he will at least allow us to conduct his physical examination for the appointment of the appropriate diet, needed after a long hunger strike," said the advocate.

The press service of the Penitentiary Department of the Armenian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has confirmed that Nerses Pogosyan had stopped his hunger strike. He was transferred to the medical unit of the Nubarashen Prison under doctors' supervision, Gor Glechyan, the head of the press service of the Department, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
