Pogosyan stops hunger strike in Yerevan jail

Last night, the health condition of Nerses Pogosyan, arrested in Yerevan on suspicion of having links with Zhirair Sefilyan, sharply aggravated; and he stopped the protest hunger strike. Prison doctors assessed his condition as satisfactory.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on January 27, Nerses Pogosyan announced a dry hunger strike in protest against the court decision to extend his arrest by two months.

Pogosyan was placed behind bars on May 31, 2016. He is accused of illegal possession of weapons and ammunition. According to investigators, Nerses Pogosyan had collaborated with Zhirair Sefilyan, one of the leaders of the movement "Century without Regime". Nerses has refused to plead guilty. On February 2, a Pogosyan’s advocate reported that he was preparing a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) against the arrest of his client.

Today, employees of the office of the Armenian Ombudsperson have visited Pogosyan and learned that he had submitted an application to the administration of the Nurabashen Prison that he stopped his dry hunger strike, Zograb Eganyan, the Ombudsperson’s press secretary, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"In the course of the conversation, Pogosyan said that his health condition had sharply worsened last night; and he made the decision to stop his protest," said Eganyan.
