Georgian CEC schedules second round of elections in Tbilisi

The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia has announced that the second round of the mid-term parliamentary elections in the Mtatsminda electoral constituency in Tbilisi is scheduled for June 9. A candidate of the ruling party and an oppositionist will be opposing each other in the second tour.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 19, the mid-term elections to the parliament of Georgia from the Mtatsminda District of Tbilisi and the local self-governmental elections took place in a number of municipalities. At the elections in Tbilisi, none of the candidates gained more than 50% of the votes, so the second round will be held there, the CEC of Georgia reports.

Salome Zourabichvili, a majoritarian MP from the Mtatsminda electoral constituency in Tbilisi, was elected the president of Georgia, and therefore her seat in the parliament became vacant.

According to the final data of the voting, in the second round of the mid-term elections in the Mtatsminda electoral constituency in Tbilisi, Vladimir Kakhadze, a candidate from the "Georgian Dream-Democratic Movement" ruling party, and Shalva Shavgulidze, a candidate from the alliance of the opposition parties "European Georgia" and "Free Democrats", will be opposing each other.

In Tbilisi, the district election commission got two complaints during the elections, but rejected them with a notification that no violations that could affect the results of the first round were registered. The authorities could try to use the administrative resources in the second round of the elections to increase the voter turnout, experts suggested.

Let us remind you that on May 20, the CEC of Georgia announced that the "Georgian Dream" ruling party won in all five electoral constituencies, where early elections of mayors were held.
