Court refuses to lift arrest from Yuri Khachaturov

Today, the Armenian Court of Appeal (CoA) has rejected the defence's appeal against the arrest and subsequent release on bail of Yuri Khachaturov, the Secretary General of the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization), who is accused within the case of dispersing protests ten years ago.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 28, the court decided to release Yuri Khachaturov, arrested within the case of overthrowing the constitutional order in Yerevan in 2008, on bail of more than 10,000 US dollars. Investigators explained that this preventive measure does not prohibit him from leaving Armenia. On August 4, Khachaturov returned from Yerevan to Moscow and started working.

His defence filed a complaint against the decision of the first-instance court, but today the CoA of Armenia refused to satisfy it, Migran Pogosyan, one of the advocates, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to his story, the defence will take a decision to appeal against the CoA's refusal at the Armenian Court of Cassation only after receiving the CoA's judgement in writing and discussing the details contained therein with Khachaturov.

Since April 2017, Yuri Khachaturov works as the Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). In 2008-2016, he held the posts of the Chief for the Headquarters of the Armenian Armed Forces and the First Deputy Minister of Defence of Armenia.

In July, Yuri Khachaturov came to Armenia to testify as a witness of the riots which occurred on May 1-2, 2008. However, he was accused of overthrowing the constitutional order. Yuri Khachaturov himself pleads not guilty.
