Court upholds refusal to sanction a gay parade in Uryupinsk

The Court for the Volgograd Region has dismissed a complaint filed by LGBT activists against the refusal of the Uryupinsk authorities to sanction a gay pride parade and two rallies in December 2017.

The LGBT activists requested the Mayoralty to sanction a gay pride parade in support of a tolerant attitude towards homosexuals and gender minorities in Russia and respect for their rights, a rally with a call to make Uryupinsk the centre of Russian and international gay tourism, and a rally demanding the execution of the decision pronounced by the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in the case of "Baev and Others v. Russia", the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

The head of the Uryupinsk administration refused to sanction the events and referred to the Law "On protecting children from information that is harmful to their health and development" and the Law banning "promoting non-traditional sexual relations among minors".

The plaintiffs believe that the above refusal violated their right to freedom of assembly.

Nikolai Alekseev, an LGBT movement activist, wrote on Twitter that he would go to the ECtHR to challenge the decision of the Court for the Volgograd Region.
