Man involved in attack on Nalchik files complaint to ECtHR

The "Russian Justice Initiative" has sent to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) a complaint of Anzor Mashukov, who had been sentenced in the criminal case of the attack on Nalchik. According to the human rights defenders, the article of the Convention on Human Rights concerning respect for private and family life was violated with regard to Anzor Mashukov.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 23, 2014, the Supreme Court (SC) of Kabardino-Balkaria sentenced five defendants in the case of the attack on Nalchik to life imprisonment, three others were released considering the term of imprisonment already served by them, and the rest were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment, from 9 to 23 years of imprisonment. On January 28, 2016, the Russian SC refused to cancel life sentences to five prisoners, but reduced the sentences to the other defendants in the case. Anzor Mashukov was sentenced to life imprisonment and transported to the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.

"During the trial, he repeatedly appealed to court with requests for a long meeting with members of his family. His requests were dismissed, and thus he was deprived of the right to privacy, including the communication with his wife and his minor children. Meanwhile, the Constitutional Court found no signs of non-conformity with the Constitution in the ban on long meetings for detainees and persons under investigation," reports the website of the human rights organization.
