Prosecutor's Office of Chechnya takes up inquiry into disappearance of 17-year-old girl

The criminal investigation into the disappearance in winter of 2014 of Seda Kanaeva, a 17-year-old resident of Grozny in now conducted under supervision of the local Prosecutor's Office.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by a source from the Office that a criminal case on this fact was initiated back this May.

The Office believes that earlier the investigation was conducted improperly – in particular, Kanaeva's close relatives had not been questioned.

According to preliminary data, at night on February 28, 2014, the 17-year-old Seda Kanaeva went out of her parents' house and disappeared. Her whereabouts and fate are still unknown. Investigators do not rule out a murder, but no there is no data confirming it.

"Here, a so-called 'honour killing' is not excluded, but it should be established," said a local law enforcement source, noting that in such cases it is extremely difficult to prove that the murder was committed by relatives.

The "Caucasian Knot" has repeatedly reported about "honour killings" in Chechnya. In January, a similar case was sent to the court of the Achkhoi-Martan District of Chechnya: a man is accused of killing his elder sister.
