Relatives of kidnapped residents of Chechnya receive genetic passports

On July 28, thirty-two residents of the Chechen Republic, whose relatives disappeared during military campaigns, received the so-called "genetic passports". To date, over 300 persons have received these documents.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the process of issuing DNA-passports in the republic is on since the spring of 2013.

According to the spokesman of the republic's MIA, such document guarantees "almost 100 percent opportunity to identify a person by human remains." To receive a genetic passport, relatives of a missing person should approach the Bureau of Forensic-Medical Examination in Grozny.

The Ministry of Public Health of Chechnya has noted that the procedure of blood analysis in relatives of missing persons is free of charge.

The exact number of residents of Chechnya, who disappeared during the first and second Chechen Wars, has not been established. The republic's MIA asserts that as of today their database contains 3016 missing persons. Human rights activists believe that the real number of missing persons is much higher.
