Court refuses to consider victims' claims in Ali Taziev's case

When pronouncing the sentence to Ali Taziev, also known as Magas, the North-Caucasian District Military Court left without consideration the civil claims filed by the victims to collect compensation from the convict.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that, according to the prosecution, at night on June 22, 2004, Ali Taziev took part in the attack of militants commanded by Shamil Basaev on governmental objects in Ingushetia. On June 30 this year, the prosecutor demanded life imprisonment for Taziev and a fine of one million roubles. Taziev refused to plead guilty. On July 9, the Court sentenced Ali Taziev, who was already sentenced to life imprisonment for a number of resonant crimes, to the second term of life imprisonment.

After the pronouncement of the verdict, the Court has read out the judgment mentioning amounts claimed by the victims against the convict in the civil lawsuits.

The Court has refused to consider those claims and explained such a decision by the fact that the victims did not appear at the court session. Meanwhile, the Court has retained their right to re-file the claims in the civil proceedings.

The amounts of the civil claims are ranged from 4000 up to 300 million roubles, the "Kommersant" reports.

At the court session on the Ali Taziev's case held on June 4, only one of five questioned victims has confirmed his civil claim to collect the compensation for moral damage from the defendant. The other victims have retracted their claims filed by them earlier.
