This year Dagestan has registered 157 new HIV-infection cases

Dagestan remains in the lead in Southern Russia by HIV-infection incidence; during 10 months of 2011, the republic registered 157 new cases, as reported in the course of the events held in the republic on the World AIDS Day, marked on December 1.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed at the Dagestani Department of the "Rospotrebnadzor" (Russian Federal Agency for Consumer Supervision), in total, from January 1, 1989, to October 31, 2011, the republic registered more than 1700 cases of HIV-infection. During the same period, 334 HIV-infected persons died, including 67 persons from AIDS.

In total, 130 children were born from HIV-infected mothers, of whom the HIV diagnosis was confirmed in 9 children. More than 50 children are under dispensary observation until their HIV status is established.

Only within 10 months of 2011, 157 new cases of HIV infection were registered among residents of Dagestan. This is by 11 cases more than during the same period of 2010. The most unfavourable situation is observed in the Derbent District, Khasavyurt and Makhachkala.

As reported by the "Rospotrebnadzor" Department, the HIV-infected patients are mainly young people. Infecting during drug use is still the main route of HIV-infection. About a quarter of cases were infected through sexual intercourse.
