Dagestan: Prosecutor's Office challenges acquittal of "Chernovik" journalists

On July 5 the Supreme Court of Dagestan will consider the appeal of the Prosecutor's Office of the republic to the verdict of the Lenin Federal Court of Makhachkala dated May 19, 2011. The Prosecutor's Office demands to cancel the acquittal of the journalists of the Dagestani weekly newspaper "Chernovik" (Draft).

In July 2008 two criminal cases were instituted against Nadira Isaeva, the editor-in-chief of the weekly newspaper "Chernovik", and four journalists. Among the complaints against the newspaper is the quoting in the article "Terrorists No. 1" dated July 4, 2008, statements of Rappani Khalilov, a militant commander. The journalists were also accused of deliberate dissemination of the information aimed to excite hostility against law enforcement agents. The court acquitted the journalists of all charges against them.

Today the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Magomed Magomedov, the former journalist of "Chernovik" and one of the defendants in this case, the Prosecutor's Office demands to recall the acquittal and to consider the case in the same court, but by new judges.
