The Government of Georgia will announce a competition on creation of a memorial to the victims of genocide of the Circassians

Today the Parliament of Georgia will discuss the question of creation of a memorial to the victims of genocide of the Circassian people. Sculptors from all over the world will be able to take part in the contest of projects of the memorial.

The Parliament will also consider establishing a Center of Circassian culture. Nugzar Tsiklauri, Chairman of the Committee of the affairs of diasporas and the Caucasus, will bring up both questions at the session of the supreme legislative body of the country.

According to Tsiklauri, if the Parliament approves creation of the memorial then consultations with the Government on this question will be held. The project of the memorial will be chosen by way of an international competition. He did not rule out that the memorial museum and cultural center might be located in different districts but the places for them have not yet been selected.

“This is a new geopolitical reality of the Caucasian region. Thanks to this step, we will strengthen the idea of united and peaceful Caucasus”, the Deputy concluded.

According to Anro Gabisonia, representative of the network of Circassian Congress in Georgia, the memorial will be supposedly erected at the coast of the Black sea for the Circassian people have a tradition: every year, on May, 21, they drop flowers into the sea in sign of memory of the victims of genocide.
