Candidate for MP assassinated in Adygea

In Maikop, Hadzhimos Khatsechukov, candidate for the Parliament of Adygea from the "Spravedlivaya Rossiya" (Fair Russia) Party, registered at the one-candidate constituency in the Shovgenov District of the republic, was shot dead.

He died frm a machinegun round fired from a passing-by car.

The place of the incident is studied by operative services; the investigation is underway, according to the ITAR-TASS.

According to law enforcement authorities, Mr Khatsechukov was already attempted on several years ago. Then, the offender, who shot from a Makarov pistol, was arrested, convicted and has already served his term.

The elections to the State Council-Khasse of Adygea will take place on March 13, 2011. Today, the  pre-election agitation in mass media has started.

  • Rights defenders give number of kidnapped people in Chechnya

    At least 80 residents of Chechnya have been kidnapped after a car with a DUSTUM license plate was set on fire; volunteers have identified the names of a number of them. In the village of Starye Atagi, Urus-Martan District, about 50 members of the Saif-Islam Elmurzaev family, suspected of setting the above car on fire, have been kidnapped; and about 30 people have been kidnapped in the Shali District, the "Memorial" Centre for Human Rights Defence (CHRD)* has reported.

    The case against Abdulmumin Gadjiev, Abubakar Rizvanov and Kemal Tambiev is politically motivated, human rights defenders have stated. They recognized Rizvanov and Tambiev as political prisoners, demanding that the criminal prosecution of those convicted on charges of financing terrorism be stopped and that they be released, as well as an inquiry into the torture of Kemal Tambiev.
