Chechen authorities promise to restore water supply of large village before end of year

Residents of Alkhan-Kala village, Grozny District, have no centralized water supply for nearly twenty years; water which fails to meet sanitary standards is brought to them in tanks. The authorities promise to fix water supply till the end of this year.

"Presently, villagers have to pay 70 roubles for one cubic meter of potable water; since salaries are rather low in rural districts, payments for water are a serious burden on family budgets," an employee of the local Ministry of Construction and Housing Economy told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to his story, the construction of water line to Alkhan-Kala was included into the next year's federal programme, but given the situation it was decided to complete this work later this year.

Meanwhile, local residents report that the works of laying down the water line to the village began more than two months ago, but they were conducted rather poorly.

"Naturally, we hope that at least by the end of this year the authorities will solve the water supply problem," said Magomed D., a resident of Alkhan-Kala.

In his opinion, main attention in Chechnya is given to major cities and district centres, while villages, where dozens of people live, find themselves in the background.
