Georgian authorities want to bring body of refugee-suicide from Germany

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Georgia is actively negotiating with respective bodies in Germany aiming to take home the body of citizen of Georgia David Mardiani, 17, who committed suicide on March 7 in a prison hospital in Germany.

According to German masses media, Mardiani got to Germany from Poland; then, he addressed a refugee camp and applied for political asylum. German authorities rejected Mardiani's application for refuge and put him into a prison for would-be-deported refugees.

Let us note here that incidents with citizens of Georgia who want to get political asylum in the countries of the European Union are rather frequent. The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 29 Konstantin Kavtaradze, Georgia's ambassador to Poland, said that about 4000 citizens of Georgia would be deported from Poland in several months to come.

As reported today by Inga Kvinikadze, deputy head of the consular department of the Georgian MFA, David Mardiani had been detained for his illegal stay in the territory of Germany and placed into preliminary custody, where he went on hunger strike demanding release. Then he was transferred to a hospital, where he committed suicide on March 7.

The issue of transportation of David's body to his homeland will be addressed after the end of examination, the IA "News-Georgia" reports.

Earlier, a protest action, organized by board of refugees of Hamburg and the Left-Wing Party, took place in front of the prison, where Mardiani hung himself. The protesters stood for granting shelter to all the refugees present in the territory of Germany and liquidation of the prison for deportees.
