In April, ECtHR to consider Sandro Girgvliani's murder in Georgia

On April 27, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) will consider the case about the murder in Georgia in 2005 of a bank employee Sandro Girgvliani.

In early February, the Tbilisi City Court partially satisfied the claim of the family of assassinated Sandro Girgvliani; now the respondent will pay out 40,000 laris to the family.

According to David Dzhandieri, advocate of the family, it is not clear yet whether the family will appeal against this decision. Sandro Girgvliani's father claims moral compensation in the sum of 200,000 laris from the killers of his son, who were first convicted for the murder, but then pardoned. The "GHN" writes that the family's lawyer has already brought a complaint to the ECtHR.

In its turn, the European Court has officially announced the starting date of considering the case of Sandro Girgvliani, shot dead in 2005. The Strasbourg Court will consider the complaint on April 27, 2010.

The claim "Irina Enukidze and Guram Girgvliani versus Georgia" puts accusations forward against the authorities of Georgia under four articles of the European Convention of Human Rights. In particular, the right to life, the right to fair trial, prohibition of torture, violation of efficient measures of defence.

The consideration of the case by the ECtHR will enable the claimants to demand a new investigation and compensation of moral damage by the government of Georgia in the sum of 300,000 euros, the "Georgia Online" notes.

Sandro Girgvliani was killed on January 27, 2005, in Okrokana forest, where he was tortured. Four suspects - employees of the Department of Constitutional Safety - were detained in early 2006 and sentenced to 7-8 years of prison; however later, in 2009, Guram Donadze, Vasil Sanodze, Oleg Melnikov and Data Akhalaya were released under the pardon decree, signed by President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili.
