Why do they so often look for the "fifth column" in Georgia?

15:33, 04 May 2009

In Georgia, back from the 1990s the words "fifth column" and "Kremlin's agent" had and have the role of a red rag. After collapse of the USSR, all the presidents, in this or that extent, treated Russia as the main Georgia's enemy, hence, both supporters, the "bog" and a significant part of youth have perceived during these two decades the "fifth column", first of all, as pro-Russian forces.

It's strange, but today as well, any journalist, politician or public figure who speaks excessively warm about Russia – immediately gets this stigma. Certainly, there's a reason, but in this blog we'll talk about the consequence.

And Russia has the so-called "fifth column", and many other countries, just in Georgia, I think, it's already beyond the edge. Sometimes it seems to me, here, I don't like IT, it's black, uninteresting but when the majority, in no way different from this black and uninteresting, MOREOVER, aspires to be in it, but wouldn't confess, and shouts – halloo on it, it's bad, then, a reflex of contradiction instantly works, and one wants saying the opposite, just to contradict... Sort of: and what are you? Are you better? And so on, let's do with this metaphysical deviation.

I just recollect the interview with Otar Ioseliani and the creepy feeling I felt from the words of this man. Who knows the topic will guess what I mean. I've often met pompous and goose-like people, who look like feeling nothing but hatred and contempt... For me, such people aren't worth a penny.

And, in conclusion, about the 5th column in Georgia. Naturally, GEORGIA HAS ITS OWN FIFTH COLUMN!

These are people in a sort information vacuum, and not only on their own fault... Sometimes, when I get to them, I'm strongly surprised: we speak Russian, and, sort of, should easily understand each other, but... As if they are from some other world, these people have very little in common with the Georgian population of the country, as if they came from afar and occasionally stayed here... It is really a great problem. Maybe it all could be different, if they were more adapted, if in due time Ossetians and Abkhazians would be more broadly presented to Tbilisi, and not only they... I don't know; it's a very long and serious topic...

P. S.

The term "fifth column" was first used by Spanish General E. Mola, commander of nationalists in the time of civil war. When advancing on Madrid, in early October of 1936 he broadcasted an appeal to the population of the Spanish capital, in which he declared that apart from four army columns at his disposal he also had the fifth column in Madrid, would strike from rear at the turning point of the battle.
