Father of Elza Kungaeva can apply to Strasbourg Court

Father of the Chechen girl Elza Kungaeva, for whose murder former Colonel Yuri Budanov was convicted, promises to apply to the Strasbourg Court should a decision is made on the Colonel's conditional early relief (CER).

We remind you that on December 3 the petition in favour of applying CER to Yuri Budanov was submitted to repeated consideration. This decision was condemned by Nurdi Nukhazhiev, Ombudsman in Chechnya.

"Such criminals like Budanov shall have life imprisonment, to say nothing about any CER. The decision of the Ulyanovsk Regional Prosecutor's Office on applying CER to Budanov evidences a selective approach in applying law by Russian law enforcers," Mr Nukhazhiev said.

Visa Kungaev, father of the perished girl, in his turn, voiced against CER for Budanov. "I can't believe that Budanov has repented. At the trial, he had repeatedly threatened me and my family. Such people deserve life imprisonment. If he still manages to receive his CER, we'll appeal against this decision, up to the Strasbourg Court," he said in his interview to the "Novaya Gazeta".
