Rights defender Orlov* has time for studying case files restricted

A doctor has prescribed treatment for Oleg Orlov*, convicted in the case of discrediting the Russian Army, but the judge demanded that he complete his review of the case materials by April 5 inclusive; she has accused him of "protracting" the process, human rights defenders have informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Orlov* is deprived of hot meals, subjected to gruelling daily trips from the SIZO (pre-trial prison) to the court. He asked for medical care due to a cold and hearing worsening, but was not examined by doctors at the SIZO due to daily trips to the court. His advocate is unable to have a confidential conversation with his client for two weeks.

The doctor managed to examine Oleg Orlov* at the SIZO and prescribe him some treatment. But the judge summoned Orlov to court again, although the doctor confirmed the need for treatment, the "Memorial" Centre for Human Rights Defence** has reported.

"The judge claimed that Orlov* had failed to "medical certificates" and stated that he was "protracting the trial," human rights defenders have stated.

*Included by the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) into the register of foreign agents.

**As reported on the website of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), the reason for including on March 1, 2024, the unregistered "Memorial" Centre for Human Rights Defence (CHRD) into the roster of foreign agents was the spread of "inaccurate information aimed at creating a negative image of the Russian Federation, as well as the Russian Armed Forces."
