In Quarter 1 of 2023, seven people perished in armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

During the period from January 1 to March 31, 2023, at least nine people suffered in the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. Seven alleged militants were killed and two law enforcers were wounded. Two victims were recorded in Chechnya, four – in the Stavropol Territory and three – in Ingushetia. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from open sources.

On February 8, a counterterrorist operation (CTO) regime was introduced at the Petrovsky Farm in the Stavropol Territory. In the course of the CTO, four militants were killed, who, according to law enforcers, had planned a terror act at the railway station. Two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found at the place of the shootout.

On March 28, two law enforcers were wounded in an attack on a road-and-patrol (DPS) traffic police post located on the Ingush-North-Ossetian border. Later, one of the alleged attackers, Ramazan Eldiev, was found dead. The man died of a gunshot wound received on March 28.

On March 29, sources reported an attack on the ROVD (District Interior Division) post in Gudermes and two casualties. The head of Chechnya said that law enforcers had blocked two militants who refused to surrender, threw a grenade and were killed. The Chechen branch of Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) reported that relatives, residents of Gudermes, born in 1963 and 1989, perished. Later, it became known that they were Ruslan Elkhadjiev and Zelim Elkhadjiev, Ruslan's sister's son.

In January 2023, no victims of the armed conflict were recorded.

The given statistics cannot accurately reflect the number of victims. Not all the data is included into news bulletins. It is not always possible to check how true the statements of law enforcement bodies are; and new data on the events that happened in the reporting period become known sometimes after the publication of statistics on the "Caucasian Knot".

Thus, in Quarter 1 of 2023, there were three incidents, seven alleged militants were killed, and two law enforcers were wounded. In the previous, Quarter 4 of 2022, there were two incidents (in Chechnya and Kabardino-Balkaria) and four alleged militants were killed. A year ago, in Quarter 1 of 2022, there were no reports about any victims.
