Ardon

Rayon (sector) centre in North Ossetia, 39 km north-west of Vladikavkaz. Located on the Ossetian Slanting Plain, on the arm of the Ardon River. Railway station in the Darg-Kokh - Alagir branch of the Kotlyarevskaya - Beslan line. Motor road junction. Population (1992 est.) 18 thousand, (1979 est.) 12.7 thousand.

The town was transformed out of a village in 1964. Agricultural centre. Ardon has a calibrating plant, a cannery, a hempen-processing factory and other enterprises for processing of local agricultural raw materials. Environs of the city are devoted to gardening.
