Opposition urges President of Abkhazia Raul Khadjimba to resign

The President of Abkhazia, Raul Khadjimba, must step down so that the protests in the country do not lead to tragic consequences, the "Aitaira" Party has stated amid the storming of the building of the presidential administration.

On Thursday, January 9, 2020, hundreds of protesters gathered at the administration building; they tried to get inside and knocked out the doors.

The only way out of the political crisis is Khadjimba's resignation, said the statement of the "Aitaira" Party, as quoted by the "Abkhazia-Inform" website.

Law enforcers, who are guarding the building, manage to restrain the protesters despite the knocked-out doors, the "Sputnik Abkhazia" has reported.

Protests are taking place amid the session of the Supreme Court (SC) of Abkhazia, which is considering a complaint lodged by Alkhas Kvitsiniya against the decision of the Central Election Commission (CEC) on recognition of the election outcomes.

Alkhas Kvitsiniya, a presidential candidate, has appealed against the election outcomes, but the Abkhazian SC refused to satisfy his complaint.

Let us remind you that Raul Khadjimba won the election by a slight margin: in the second round, 47.39% of all the voters voted for him' while Alkhas Kvitsiniya gained 46.17%. Nine parties and public organizations demanded to declare the outcomes null and void, insisting that Khadjimba should have gathered not a simple, but an absolute majority of votes.
