Tbilisi protesters arrested and fined

The court has arrested an activist, Anro Dzhandjgava, for five days, and fined David Napetvaridze, another protester at the building of the National Library of Georgia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 29, activists and oppositionists staged a march at the National Library near the building of the Georgian Parliament. During clashes with law enforcers, three oppositionists were detained; later, policemen released them.

Anro Dzhandjgava, the detained activist of the "Dare" movement, has been sentenced to five days of arrest, while David Napetvaridze was fined by 1000 laris (about USD 337). Two other protesters, Dimitry Liparteliani and Giorgi Parumbegov, received oral reprimands.

The court rulings were criticized by Dmitry Liparteliani, an activist of the "Dare" movement, who said that the punishments were handed down by the order of the ruling party's leadership, the "Rustavi-2" TV Channel reports.

The protests, caused by the MPs' failure to vote for the bill that assumed to change the electoral system in Georgia, are being held in Tbilisi since November 14. Now, protesters are demanding the resignation of the government and the removal from power of Bidzina Ivanishvili, the leader of the ruling "Georgian Dream" Party. They also demand to hold early parliamentary elections.
