Georgian parliament defines punishments for sexual harassments

Georgian MPs have approved the introduction of fines, arrests and corrective works for sexual harassments in public places and at work.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 24, 2017, the Women's Movement sent a petition to the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament demanding to introduce punishments for sexual harassments, including at workplaces.

Sexual harassments will be fined by 300 GEL (laris) (over 110 US dollars). In the case of a repeated harassment committed within a year, the fine will be already 500 GEL (about USD 185), or appointment of a month-long corrective works, the "Sputnik Georgia" reports.

Sexual harassment is defined as "unwanted sexual behaviour against a person in public places", if it frightens or offends a person. This includes phrases of sexual nature and demonstration of genitals, the edition has explained.

In January 2018, a court in Tbilisi found the well-known TV presenter Shalva Ramishvili guilty of sexual harassment against journalist Tatiya Samkharadze and obliged him to compensate for the moral harm in the amount of about USD 770.
