Opposition treats debt amnesty as Georgian authorities' "gesture of despair"

Members of the oppositional "United National Movement" (UNM) have stated that the Georgian Government announced debt amnesty, since "it is in despair and goes for broke."

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 18, Grigol Vashadze, the UNM's presidential candidate, called on the government to take measures to write off citizens' debts. According to his story, "every second Georgian citizen has obligations either to microfinance organizations, or to the three leading banks." On November 19, the Georgian Prime Minister, Mamuka Bakhtadze, said that Georgian citizens would be cleared of their debts to banks, online organizations and other financial institutions for an amount of more than 562 million US dollars.

On November 19, Grigol Vashadze commented on the initiative of the authorities to write off debts of certain categories of citizens. According to his version, it is a "gesture of despair."

"This is ... a gesture of despair, because we are proposing major reforms of the banking system and so on," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent quotes Mr Vashadze's statement made on air of the "Rustavi-2" TV Company.

Pyotr Tsiskarishvili, a UNM member, has also stated that the government is in despair and goes for broke.

"This is an absurd promise of peace. It indicates how strong the opposition is that makes the government to go for broke," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent has translated Mr Tsiskarishvili's words pronounced on air of the "Rustavi-2" TV Company.
