Prosecutor demands 10 years in prison for journalist Elchin Ismayilly

Public prosecutor has requested the court to find Azerbaijani journalist Elchin Ismayilly guilty of extortion, abuse of power, and acceptance of bribe. This was reported by an advocate of the defendant.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 17, journalist Elchin Ismayilly, a member of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), was detained and charged with extortion, abuse of office, and acceptance of bribe.

The journalist was arrested for criticizing the authorities in the media and social networks, his advocate believes.

The prosecutor has requested the court to find the journalist guilty on all charges and sentenced him to 10 years of imprisonment, reported advocate Elchin Sadygov. According to him, there is "no reliable evidence" in the case.

On September 15, the defence will deliver the final speech.

On February 22, the international organization Reporters Without Borders (HRW) reported inclusion of Elchin Ismayilly in the list of journalists arrested in Azerbaijan "fabricated charges."
