Defence treats extension of Magomadov’s arrest as unjustified

The court in Krasnodar has refused to grant a complaint against the extension of the arrest of Anzor Magomadov, a resident of Sochi, suspected of preparing a terror act and an attempt to join militants in Syria. Magomadov's guilt has not been proved; and he has been unreasonably kept in custody for over a year, his advocate has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in August 2016, Anzor Magomadov, a 27-year-old resident of Sochi, a former trainee of the Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) was detained on suspicion of an attempt to join the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS), banned in Russia. His relatives assert that during his detention, firearms and ammunition were planted on Magomadov.

According to Yuri Dudchenko, his advocate, on August 11, the court extended Magomadov's arrest until October 15, 2017.

Magomadov "recently had a second child born into his family; therefore, he has no reason to hide from investigators," said the advocate.

However, the appellate court pointed out that Magomadov "is accused of particularly grave crimes."

According to investigators, Magomadov "tried to get to Syria via Abkhazia, Georgia and Turkey."

"But my client had no foreign passport; how then could he get to Syria via Georgia and Turkey?" Mr Dudchenko has asked.

According to the defence’s version, law enforcers "could themselves book a ticket to Abkhazia for Magomadov".
