Vladimir Putin claims threat of increased IS activities in Southern Russia

The terrorist organization "Islamic State", banned in Russia by the court, plans to destabilize the situation in the southern regions of Russia. This has been stated today by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

"Underground IS units have been created and are operating in the SCO countries. This was also revealed by the investigation into the terror act in Saint Petersburg in Russia. According to the available information, ISIL (IS, earlier ISIL, recognized as a terrorist organization and banned in Russia by court, note of the "Caucasian Knot") is preparing new plans for destabilizing Central Asia and the southern regions of Russia," the Russian President said.

The SCO includes China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.

Therefore, according to Vladimir Putin, it is necessary to strengthen the coordination of the special services of the SCO countries, including through the anti-terrorist agencies, the "Interfax" reports today.
