ECtHR obliges Russia to pay compensation to family members of killed protester in Dagestan

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has demanded from the Russian authorities to pay 50,000 euros in compensation for moral damage to family members of Murad Nagmetov, who was killed in 2006 during the dispersal of the anti-corruption action in the Dokuzparinsky District of Dagestan.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 25, 2006, the lawful action held by residents of the villages of the Dokuzparinsky District against corruption of the local authorities was suppressed by the militia with the use of weapons and special means.

According to the complaint filed by Yarmet Nagmetov, his son Murad Nagmetov died as a result of the use of lethal weapons against him, and no effective investigation into his death was carried out, the press service of the ECtHR reports.

The European Court of Human Rights has found in the actions of the Russian authorities a violation of Article 2 (the right to life) of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and ordered Russia within three months to pay the complainant the amount of 50,000 euros in compensation for moral damage plus any tax that may be imposed, states the report posted on the ECtHR's website today.
