Azerbaijani activist reports her detention at airport
In the evening of March 7, before leaving for Turkey from the Heydar Aliev Airport in Baku, Mekhriban Vezir, the leader of the Centre for Political Culture of Azerbaijani Women, was detained when she was passing the border control. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by the activist herself.
According to Mekhriban Vezir, she was taken to a separate room, where customs officials "carefully checked her luggage."
"This is not the first time that they stop me in similar manner and arranged actual inspection of my belongings and luggage. Despite my demands to provide explanations for the reasons for the inspection, this time no one told me anything as usual. They have no official complaints against me, and I'm not under investigation," said Mekhriban Vezir.
"They let me know by their hints that those humiliating searches and inspections are related to my activities in the civilian sector. Therefore, law enforcers said that members of NGOs 'go around here and there and transfer information abroad.' That is what bothers them," noted the activist. She has also added that she managed to board the plane "just before the very completion of the check-in" and flew to Turkey.
