Court reduces compensation to builder beaten by policeman in Sochi

On February 16, the Krasnodar Regional Court made a decision concerning a complaint filed by Sergey Kuznetsov, a former policeman in Sochi, sentenced for beating builder Pavel Solovyov, and reduced the amount of compensation earlier assigned to the builder from 650,000 down to 350,000 roubles.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in April 2013, Pavel Solovyov, a resident of Novosibirsk, who worked in Sochi on construction of Olympic facilities, was brought to hospital in serious condition. He claimed to be beaten by a policeman. As a result of beating, the victim lost his spleen.

When commenting on the decision of the Krasnodar   Regional Court to reduce the amount of compensation, Pavel Solovyov claimed he treated the Court's decision as unfair. "Does the Court believe health state of a human being costs 350,000 roubles?" asked Pavel Solovyov.

"The Court has reduced the amount of compensation down to 300,000 roubles for the man who lost his body organ and who got a disability by fault of the sentenced person. This is more than unfair decision. My client Pavel Solovyov has already spent and still spends for medicines and lawsuits the amounts much higher than the compensation assigned by the Court. We believe the Court's decision is unfair, and we will challenge it at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR)," said Alexander Enin, an advocate of the victim.
