Court refuses to challenge prosecutor in Valery Permyakov's case

In the case on the murder of the Avetisyan family members in Gyumri, public prosecutor has failed to make efforts to ensure the interests of the Armenian side and the victim party, states a representative of the successors of the Avetisyan family. The court of appeal has refused in disqualification of the public prosecutor.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 23, Valery Permyakov, a soldier of the 102nd Russian military base in Gyumri, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of seven members of the Avetisyan family. The successors of the Avetisyan family demand to re-consider the case, since they believe that the motives for the crime have not been clarified and that Valery Permyakov could act not alone.

Today, the court has considered the motion to challenge public prosecutor Gevorg Gevorgyan, filed by Arthur Sakunts, the head of the Vanadzor Office of the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly, representing the interests of the victim party. The court has found the motion groundless.

The human rights defender insisted that Gevorg Gevorgyan failed to make efforts to involve the successors of the Avetisyan family in the investigation and failed to defend the state interests of Armenia at the trial.
