Sochi Environmental Council approves pet regulations in resort city

The draft of pet regulations submitted for discussion includes the amendments proposed by ecological activists and related to deadlines for disposal of animals sent to shelters and rules for handling biological waste.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the draft pet regulations, including procedures for capturing and disposal of stray animals in the city, were developed by the Mayor's Office of Sochi. According to animal rights activists, the project needs to be reviewed.

The developed regulations should be adopted to resolve disputed relationship on maintenance and care of pets, stated Rostislav Goncharov, the deputy chief of the department of agriculture of the Sochi administration. He was supported by City Mayor Anatoly Pakhomov.

Nina Rogachova, a member of the Sochi Environmental Council, has voiced the need to exclude from the draft pet regulations the requirements on disposal of stray animals after six months in shelters.

According to Nina Rogachova, the city is not ready to disposal, since there are no places for the storage of biological waste and to dispose of animal excrements in garbage cans of waste is dangerous.

At the meeting, it was proposed to create special areas for walking with dogs and cats, set containers for the storage of animal excrements, and allocate spaces for burial of animals.
