Eight persons killed in shootout in Chechnya

Eight militants have been liquidated in the Gudermes District of Chechnya, the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) has reported, adding that four policemen were wounded in the shootout.

"The incident occurred at night on October 9 in Gerzel-Engel-Yurt highway, where policemen tried to stop the two passenger cars; however, the drivers refused to obey," said a local law enforcement source.

According to his version, "in answer to demand to stop, they opened fire from inside the cars, to which policemen responded." In the shootout, four policemen were wounded. Both cars were burnt down, the "Interfax" reports.

Eight suspected militants were killed, the Department of the ICRF for Chechnya has reported.

One of the casualties has been pre-identified. "This is the 33-year-old gang leader Ali Demilkhanov, a native of Kurchaloy District, who had been on the federal wanted list for a few years," said a police source, adding that the other seven casualties have not been identified yet.
