Safaryan treats the case against him as fabricated

During the court session in Yerevan on the case of activist Gevorg Safaryan, the defendant has stated that policemen had provoked the conflict, after which he was detained.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Gevorg Safaryan, an activist and a member of the "Constituent Parliament", was detained at New Year's Night after activists' conflict with the police in Freedom Square in Yerevan.

At the court session on June 6, the activist stated that the incident occurred as a result of policemen's excess of their service powers.

"Policemen prevented to set up a New Year Tree; moreover, they didn't let a person dressed in a New Year Tree costume to Freedom Square and refused to legally justify their actions," said Safaryan, adding that the criminal case against him was totally fabricated for political reasons.

After the court have studied the video record of the New Year incident, Tigran Airapetyan, the activist's advocate, put forward a petition asking to change the freedom restraint measure of his client.

"The video records studied during the session prove the groundlessness of the charges," said the advocate.

However, the judge refused to grant the motion, considering it to be unjustified.
