Protest action in Nardaran stopped at request of local elders

In Azerbaijan, at the meeting of elders and representatives of Nardaran, it was decided to stop the protest action and unblock streets inside the village. The step has been taken in order to avoid confrontation with law enforcers, as well as by the need to take bodies of the persons killed during the special operation on November 26 and bury them.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 26, as a result of clashes in the village of Nardaran, two policemen and five local residents were killed. The unrest was caused by the special operation, during which 14 people were detained, including theologian Talekh Bagirzade. After the unrest had occurred, Nardaran was deprived of the electricity supply. The energy company has explained the interruption in the electricity supply by the residents' debts; however, the villagers accuse the authorities of provocation. The villagers faced difficulties with the supply of food. The village is blocked by the police.

At the today's meeting, according to Natiq Kerimov, one of the elders, it has been decided to stop the protest action.

"It is necessary to eliminate the tension around the village, so that we could use more peaceful legal means to defend the rights of Nardaran residents... Tomorrow, we will send a delegation to Baku for talks with the authorities," one of the elders told the people who expressed their discontent.

After the conversations, the elders have managed to persuade the majority of young people.
