On August 8, 2008, warfare of Georgia against South Ossetia broke out. Soon Russia interfered into the conflict. Active military actions lasted for five days. After that, Russia stated that the operation to force Georgia to peace was over; and on August 26, Russian President signed decrees on recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by the Russian Federation.
In the evening on August 7, candles were lit in memory of conflict casualties in the city of Gori; and on August 8 mourning prayers were held in the churches of Gori and the village of Nikozi. "We pursue the common policy aimed to unite Georgia. The process continues; and I'm personally included therein. The essence of the process is simple: Georgia should unite. It should unite not through blood and confrontations, but by means love and friendship. This process is ongoing and, surely, it will be a success," President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili said during the mourning ceremony.
