Committee for Prevention of Torture to continue work of CaT

The activities of the "Committee for Prevention of Torture" (CPT), which has replaced the "Committee against Torture" (CaT), which is working in Chechnya, were launched starting August 3. It unites several organizations that work directly with victims and will carry out executive functions.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 1 the delegates of the conference of the CaT, which was put this January into the registry of foreign agents, unanimously decided to liquidate the organization. A respective notification has already been sent to the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Branch of the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ).

The new organization – the "Committee for Prevention of Torture" – unites together several non-ptofit organizations (NPOs), created in parallel and collectively performing the functions of the CaT.

"In fact, there was a split of the CaT into several legal entities so that neither of them could be charged under the law on foreign agents," Igor Kalyapin, the Chairman of the CPT, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
