Volgograd ecologists announce establishment of independent environmental council
Representatives of public organizations and civil society activists, who held a roundtable in Volgograd, have decided to set up the Independent Environmental Council. They criticized the work of the regional environmental agencies in the region and accused bureaucrats of unwillingness to cooperate with NGOs.
The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that the statement on the establishment of the independent environmental council was announced during the roundtable on protection of environmental rights of residents of the region.
Irina Glinyanova, the Director of the NGOs' Centre for Civil Initiatives, has emphasized a number of environmental problems, which, according to her version, find no solution in the region for many years. Namely, she mentioned "the dying Volga-Akhtuba floodplain"; "illegal dumps, where we may soon get drowned"; "toxic 'Khimprom' wastes"; evaporation of pollutants from "Kaustik" ponds; pollution of "Kaustik" air zone with mercury; absence of enterprises' sanitary protection zones; low percentage of "greening" Volgograd, and others.
Galina Boldyreva, the head of the regional branch of the "Yabloko" Party and the president of the public organization "Ecology Club", said that the authorities ignore public activists.
Let us note here that this spring the Volgograd Region showed an unprecedented drop in the ecological rating of the subjects of the Russian Federation, which is run by the All-Russian public organization "Green Patrol".
