Ski area is cleared on Mount Elbrus slopes after heavy snowfall

The ski slope servicing workers of the Open Joint-Stock Company (OJSC) "Resort Elbrus" have cleared the Elbrus ski area, which was closed because of a heavy snowfall.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 6, six cars were covered by a snow avalanche in the Elbrus region; seven people blocked in the cars were rescued. The avalanche occurred one kilometre from the Azau Glade.

On January 7, the service workers of the above OJSC cleared the slopes of Mount Elbrus. The website of the "Resort Elbrus" reports that the avalanche safety is ensured in places of public entertainment.

The website of the Ministry for Emergencies (MfE) of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) reports that the Elbrus paramilitary anti-avalanche detachment has conducted a forced descent of avalanches in the Elbrus resort area.

The Elbrus winter resort of the KBR is very popular among amateurs of alpine skiing, free riding, snowboarding and other extreme forms of recreation, both among Russian and foreign tourists. The winter holiday season there usually lasts from late December till late March. Two alpine ski areas operate in the Elbrus region – the slopes of Elbrus (its western peak is 5642 m, and the eastern one – 5621 m above sea level), and Cheget (3700 m above sea level).
