New charges presented to rights defender Djafarov in Azerbaijan

The arrested Azerbaijani rights defender Rasul Djafarov has been charged with a forgery and a large-scale embezzlement. He rejects all the new charges and treats them as politically motivated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 2 Rasul Djafarov, the coordinator of the campaign "Arts for Democracy", was arrested for three months on charges of "illegal entrepreneurship", "tax evasion" and "abuse of power". On October 23, the Nasimi District Court of Baku extended the Djafarov arrest until February 2, 2015.

Now Djafarov is additionally charged under Articles 313 (forgery) and 179.3.2 (large-scale embezzlement) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan, said his advocate Fariz Namazly. According to his story, the rights defender has rejected the new charges, same as the old ones, treating them as groundless and politically motivated.
