On anniversary of October Revolution, Volgograd communists called government to resignation
On November 7, during a rally in Volgograd, members and supporters of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) demanded resignation of the Russian Government, social guarantees to "children of war", renaming Volgograd into Stalingrad and cancellation of the outcomes of the elections, which as stated by the protesters, were accompanied by falsifications, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports. Communists marched from the fountain "Peoples' Friendship" along the Alley of Heroes to the Eternal Flame, where the rally was held. The marchers carried CPRF flags and portraits of Lenin and Stalin.
The issue of renaming Volgograd is actively discussed for a long time. Starting February 1, 2013, by the decision of the City Duma, on the days of the events dedicated to the Great Patriotic War, the city is treated as "Stalingrad-City Hero". A number of townspeople, including local communists, demand a final renaming of the city into Stalingrad. Russian President Vladimir Putin had offered to solve the issue by means of a referendum.
"Social programmes exist today thanks to the victory of the Great October Socialist Revolution," believes Alexei Burov, the head of the CPRF faction in the Volgograd Regional Duma. "We have every reason to be proud of this wonderful holiday, like Frenchmen are proud of their Bastille Day. I'm for restoring the holiday of the Great October Socialist Revolution in our calendar," Burov said.
