At UN HRC session, "Article-19" demands from Russian authorities to reopen inquiry into Ahmednabiev's killing

In the course of the 27th session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), activists of the international human rights organization "Article 19" demanded from Russian authorities to reopen the investigation into the murder of the "Caucasian Knot" reporter Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev.

The HRC sessions are taking place in Geneva on September 9-26; and today, as part of the session, a meeting in the format of negotiations of UN Member States on the draft resolution on security of journalists took place.

The draft was designed by delegations of Austria, Brazil, France, Morocco, Greece, Qatar and Tunisia; and its adoption is scheduled for the next week.

The 27th session of the HRC is attended by the NGOs accredited at the United Nations; the "Article-19" among them. Today, the "Article-19" has presented its "Oral Message for the UN HRC".

In the message, Susan Koftri (correction: Susan Coughtrie, updated by the "Caucasian Knot"), the coordinator of the "Eurasia" programme of the "Article 19", mentioned the topic of improper inquiry into the murder cases of journalists Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev, Timur Kuashev, Khadjimurad Kamalov, Natalia Estemirova and Anna Politkovskaya.

In particular, according to Susan Koftri, the Russian authorities were recommended "to reopen the case of Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev." This recommendation of the "Article-19" was announced against the background of the decision of Dagestan investigators to suspend the preliminary inquiry into Ahmednabiev's assassination.
