South Ossetia commemorates victims of 2008 conflict

On August 7, South Ossetia began commemorative events on the sixth anniversary of the 2008 conflict.

In the morning on August 7, they laid wreaths to the Worship Cross, next to the barracks of the Russian peacekeeping battalion, which were burned down in August 2008. The action took place in silence, with no solemn speeches. Leonid Tibilov, the leader of South Ossetia, government officials and MPs laid wreaths and flowers to the Worship Cross.

Then, the governmental motorcade headed for the village of Tbet. Leonid Tibilov, the Prime Minister Domenti Kulumbegov, MPs and intellectuals laid wreaths to the monument "Museum of Burnt Souls", which was created on the road shoulder from the remains of burned down cars used by refugees, who tried to leave the warfare zone.

On August 8, the commemorative events will continue with a memorial liturgy and the action "Memory is stronger than time".

Let us remind you that the warfare between Georgia and South Ossetia began on August 8, 2008. Russia soon got involved into the conflict. Active combat actions lasted for five days, after which Russia announced the end of the operation of forcing Georgia to peace; and on August 26, the then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed decrees on recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by the Russian Federation. On August 28, 2008, in its turn, the Georgian Parliament voted to disrupt diplomatic relations with Russia.
