Police undertake large-scale checks of buses in Volgograd Region, locals report

During the May Day celebrations, policemen of the Volgograd Region held extensive checks at DPS (road-and-post service) checkpoints, local residents report. According to a source from the local GIBDD (traffic police), the checks have to do with a search for four residents of Dagestan, suspected of involvement in terror acts, and will last until May 12.

According to local residents, during the May 1 celebrations, Volgograd was put under unprecedented security measures. From early morning, GIBDD inspectors stopped all the intercity buses at the border of Volgograd and the Gorodische District. According to eyewitnesses, policemen paid special attention to buses with license number plates of Dagestan.

According to Denis Grabov, a GIBDD inspector of the Gorodische District, buses will be checked until May 12; they have to do with a search for four residents of Dagestan suspected of involvement in terror acts.

Sergey Sena, a member of the Public Council under the Governor of the Volgograd Region, had to spend two hours at the exit to the city because of the bus check. He noted that the DPS post is located right amidst the desert and has no toilets. According to his story, the majority of policemen explained nothing to passengers; and such behaviour is not the best characterization of the new regional leadership.
