The police in Baku dispersed a youth action of protest
On March, 6, about 50 activists of youth organization of National Front of Azerbaijan attempted to hold an action of protest in Baku demanding release of political prisoners. The police suppressed the action.
The young people gathered in the park named after Gusein Javid and started chanting slogans: “Freedom to political prisoners!”, “Freedom to prisoners of conscience!”. Several minutes later reinforced police flying squads appeared in the park. They started dispersing the participants of the action.
Bodily harm was inflicted to Dayanat Babaev and Jabbar Savalan who himself had been in custody until recently and was acknowledged prisoner of conscience by international human rights organization “Amnesty International”.
Babaev, Savalan and eight more activists were detained and delivered to unit No 28 of Yasamal district Police Department of Baku.
Deputy Chairperson of PNFA Geizal Bairamli reported that all the detainees were released by evening. Some of them got a warning notice and five young people got administrative fines.
Representative of Press Service of the Ministry of Interior Affairs Orkhan Mansurzade refuted the information of inflicting bodily harm to the participants. He declared that the action was suppressed because it was not authorized by the municipal authorities.
