ECtHR rules that Russia pays compensations to relatives of Abdullah Edilov and Movsar Khamzatov
On February 28, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has ruled that Russia should pay 134,000 euros to relatives of two young men, one of whom was kidnapped and another one was killed in Chechnya.
In the first case, Nura Edilova, a resident of the Chechen village of Goity, claimed that her son Abdullah was kidnapped from the house on August 26, 2001, by a group of unidentified persons in camouflage. Neighbours saw how the young man was forced into a military car. At that time, the mother visited a market and since that time she had not seen her son anymore.
The complainants in the second case were six residents of Chechnya, relatives of Movsar Khamzatov from the village of Starye Atagi. They claimed that the man died at time when the Russian soldiers shelled from machine guns a car, which he was driving.
In both cases, the Strasbourg ECtHR saw that the Russian authorities failed to conduct thorough investigations, the "Komsomolskaya Pravda" reports.
The ECtHR has ruled that Russia should pay compensation to the family of Movsar Khamzatov 20,000 euros to his parents, 30,000 euros to his wife and his son, 5000 euros to his brothers, and 6500 euros to all complainants on account of expenses. The mother of Abdullah Edilov should receive 67,500 euros, the "Nezavisimaya Gazeta" reports.
