In Armenia, oppositional journalist Aik Gevorkyan released from custody

Today, Aik Gevorkyan, the economic commentator of the oppositional newspaper "Aikakan Zhamanak" (Armenian Time), who was arrested on February 3 in Armenia, faced change of the pre-trial restriction measure he was released from custody at the court hearing. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent at the newspaper's edition office.

Today, at about noon, Aik Gevorkyan was released from the penal institution "Nubarashen". This information was confirmed to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by the press service of the General Prosecutor's Office of Armenia.

Let us remind you that that after the arrest the police filed a charge against the journalist under two Articles of the Criminal Code of Armenia: "inappropriate use of vehicle and traffic inflicted by negligence grave or medium damage to human health" and "leaving place of road accident." Aik Gevorkyan was put in the wanted list on January 23.

Nikol Pashinyan, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Armenian Time" and the former political prisoner, believes that the arrest of the journalist Aik Gevorkyan was caused by his professional activity. The newspaper "Aikakan Zhamanak" claimed "brazen and unlawful prosecution of their journalist." The Committee to Protect Freedom of Speech In Armenia and the Yerevan Press Club have expressed their indignation about the arrest of Aik Gevorkyan. The police claimed the lawfulness of its actions.
