In Novorossiysk, court considers case of sailor's death after his beating by colleague

The Military Court of Novorossiysk started consideration of the case against the soldier of the army unit in Novorossiysk, who is charged of the fact that in August 2011 he beat several colleagues, one of whom, a 21-year-old sailor, died.

Let us remind you that military investigators have identified the fact of maltreatment in the military unit of Novorossiysk after the sailor died there on August 25, 2011. According to expert, the death of the young man, who was called up to the military service from the Orel Region, was caused by "closed blunt trauma of chest accompanied by reflex cardiac standstill".

Dmitry Dmitriev, born in the Orel Region, had been serving in the navy for less than several months, when his mother was informed about her son's death. When the body was delivered to the city of Orel, relatives saw signs of beatings and filed a complaint to the prosecutor's office.

The investigation revealed that at that night sailor Gorbunov, one of the servicemen, beat several colleagues, and hit Dmitriev into the chest with his fist, and after that the latter died.

The criminal case was instituted on the incident under Part 4 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm, dangerous to human life, resulting in death caused by recklessness) and Part 3 of Article 335 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (violation of statutory regulations on personal relations of servicemen in absence of subordination relations between them).

Svetlana Dmitrieva, the mother of the deceased man, appealed for help to the "Pravo Materi" (Mother's Right) Foundation and said that she received a phone call from an unidentified man, who introduced himself as investigator and said that the parents of the defendant "want to resolve the issue" and offered money to her on their behalf. And, according to Veronika Marchenko, Chairperson of the Foundation Board, in two weeks, Article 111 of the Criminal Code "disappeared" out of the charges.

According to the opinion of the forensic examiner, shortly before his death Dmitry Dmitriev was severely beaten. If he had not received a blow in his chest, which caused his death, he would have got at least one serious medical problem a beaten off kidney, the newspaper "Novorossiysky Rabochy" (Novorossiysk Worker) reports.

The indictment includes two Articles of the Criminal Code "infliction of grievous bodily harm, resulting in a death of a man" and "violation of statutory regulations on personal relations of servicemen in absence of subordination relations between them", the RIA "Novosti" reports.

Comments of representatives of the investigators regarding the temporary disappearance of Articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation from the case and regarding the results of the forensic examination of multiple injuries and the beaten off kidney of the deceased man are still unavailable.
