Journalist of oppositional "Aikakan Zhamanak" arrested in Armenia

The police have arrested Aik Gevorkyan, the economic observer of the oppositional "Aikakan Zhamanak" (Armenian Time). His colleagues associate his arrest with Gevorkyan's journalism.

According to the press service of the Armenian police, Aik Gevorkyan was on the search list since January 23; he saw charges under two articles of the Criminal Code of Armenia: "Inappropriate operation of a transport means and violation of traffic rules entailing causing by negligence of grave or medium harm to one's health" and "Leaving the place of a road accident". Aik Gevorkyan was arrested and is kept at the corrective facility "Nubarashen".

The editorial board of the "Aikakan Zhamanak" has confirmed to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent the arrest of the journalist.

"How can it be that he was searched by the police since January 23? He did not hide from anyone; he was writing his materials; and, moreover, he took part in a number of press conferences, including in recent days," said one of his colleagues, who also linked Gevorkyan's arrest with his professional activities.
